Wild Collective presents the Island of Hawai’i

Wild Collective produced the recently release multimedia for National Parks magazine (a member benefit magazine of the non-profit NPCA.org) about the Island of Hawai’i.

For two weeks, the team at WC traveled the largest of the chain of islands looking for stunning imagery in both stills and video. During this period, the team had to not only produce enough strong still imagery to fill a 7-8 page feature in a national magazine, but also capture enough HD footage to produce an approx. 5-minute multimedia companion film for the web. As a team of three people, WC worked in the haze of a spewing volcanoes sulphur-dioxide tained air that burns lungs and eyes, spent hours in dense, tropical rain forests and of course, enjoyed the breeze and black sand of the beaches. The team also summited Mauna Kea, the world’s highest mountain including it’s 20,000 foot base underwater. At over 13,000 feet, oxygen was scarce and shooting became as laborious as our breathing.

Once the trip was over, there was another 4-weeks of production for both the still photos and multimedia. Stills took approx. 2 weeks to edit the nearly 125 “hero” shots that best represented the island. The multimedia went through it’s various processes from original music selection, script writing, editing, graphic design and animations to voiceover from a native hawaiian.  In the end, the project is a simple glimpse into this otherworldly landscape.
